The mission of the Roméo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative is to progressively end the use of child soldiers through a security sector approach. One of the ways they do this is to deliver tactical, prevention-oriented training to military, police, peacekeeping and other security forces in the field. Soldiers often play cards during down time. Having a deck of playing cards as a training tool was a unique and relevant way to deliver the message. Created by social marketing agency General Public, the cards depict the many ways in which children are used as weapons of war – they aren’t simply children with guns. The illustrations provided by a local artist Seraphin Kajibwami of the Democratic Republic of Congo, inspired the overall comic book design for the cards.
